When the water temps drop late in the year, some of the best Flathead Catfishing is to be had. Trophy sized Flatheads are actively feeding on baitfish and other food sources while at the same time heading to the deepest holes for the winter months. There are many variables that trigger flatheads to start feeding up and looking for a hole to winter in. Water temperature has the most effect on triggering flatheads to start this yearly process. The specific water temperature varies from region to region and leaves many flathead catfish anglers wondering when it will happen. For most regions, when the water temps get anywhere from 50 to 65deg, this is cool enough to get flatheads on the move and feeding heavily before winter sets in.
This article is specific to locating fall Flathead Catfish in small to medium sized river systems. When flatheads hole up for the winter they congregate in large structure filled holes. In a small to medium sized river there can be many different holes for flatheads to take refuge in over the fall and winter months. Not every hole will hold large amounts of flatheads. Some holes can hold a huge congregation of large flatheads while other holes in the same area will hold nothing. Bottom composition, structure, type of structure, depth, current and even a difference in water temps can be the key to a certain hole that holds large amounts of flatheads . We will never know exactly what makes one hole better than another so we let the flatheads tell us. Over several years a river system can change dramatically. Due to flooding, debris, and other things mother nature brings to it. One hole might be great one year and be dead the next. When a river floods, structure can be washed out of a hole and deposited into the next downstream hole or even further downstream.
